(Ed Note: The following is a "sequence of
events" for the Seaplane Homecoming for 2006. Take if from me, there
was never a dull moment. A flurry of activity was evident all weekend
long!)

Eastern Daylight Time From: info@glennhcurtissmuseum.org To: HJPoel@aol.com The events started Friday with 1915-era music played throughout Hammondsport’s Depot Park. There were raffles all day with local wines being awarded. Seaplane rides were given in a number of different airplanes including Cessna Citabria-type floatplanes, 1947 Republic Seabees and a Grumman Widgeon. Also on Friday, the first of a number of record-breaking flights in the Curtiss A-1 “Triad” began. The “Triad” is a reproduction of the first Seaplane, the first US Naval aircraft, and the first amphibious aircraft, which is powered by an original Curtiss OX-5 engine. The first trip was a photo run duplication a picture of LT. Theodore Ellyson giving a young lady a ride back in 1914. This was duplicated with the pilot Jim Poel and his wife Lovada (dressed in a period dress similar to the one in the picture). The next flight lifted of the water with 2 men and a full tank of fuel. This satisfied the US Navy’s requirement of “two men for two hours on patrol” in their purchase requirements. Friday evening was the annual “meet the pilots” dinner cruise on the Keuka Maid. Saturday morning started with more music, and more Seaplane rides as additional seaplanes flew in from around the US and Canada. Lunch, consisting of chili, hot dogs, and soft drinks, was served to benefit the new Hammondsport Library. At 1:00 PM the start of the Glenn Curtiss salute started. This is a seaplane parade of 20 aircraft around Keuka Lake followed by each seaplane circling the gravesite of Glen Curtiss and a tribute to the father of seaplane aviation. At 2:00 PM the Triad was started again. This time the flight circled to the left and right before landing. When returning to the beach, an American Flag was displayed as the airplane was rolled up onto the beach on its wheels (another first!). Saturday evening the “Dining with Glenn” dinner was served in the museum itself. After the dinner, numerous awards were given. Sunday morning, seaplane rides were given. As most of the planes departed, the people settled down into a quiet Hammondsport afternoon. |
